What to Pack on your Safari to Africa

There are things you should consider bringing from home and others you can purchase in Kenya. It is much easier to take things from home. Bed nets are one of the few exemptions – they can easily be found here.

Safari Packing List

Clothing

  1. T-shirts, pair of jeans, light trousers, short pants
  2. Long sleeved lightweight shirt for protection from the sun
  3. Sweater / jacket and pants for cold temperatures experienced at night and early morning
  4. Hat
  5. Swimsuit, light clothes and sandals for the beach/pool
  6. Socks
  7. Sandals for wear during safari
  8. Lightweight hiking shoes
  9. Remember: Bring enough clothing for the entire safari as you may not have them washed (most lodges do offer laundry service)

Personal Item Checking List

  1. Sleeping bag & pad
  2. Sunglasses
  3. Reading glasses (if you wear contacts bring glasses as it can be very dusty or bring an extra pair of contacts)
  4. Sunscreen / Sunblock
  5. Lip sunblock
  6. Towel for shower, towel for the beach
  7. Toiletries such as toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, shampoo
  8. Insect repellant

Other Items

  1. Camera, 300 mm lens recommended. Extra camera batteries.
  2. The main electricity supply is 220V,50Hz.
  3. Plugs are usually the 13-amp 3-pin square (British) type.
  4. Flashlight
  5. Binoculars (each of our vehicles has 1 binocular)
  6. Locks for baggage
  7. Video camera
  8. Small backpack
  9. Personal medications
  10. First Aid Kit

Beach Area Specials

In Lamu, please be advised that this area is of Muslim majority. Try to avoid clothes that show much of your body, or “skin-tight” clothes unless you are at the beaches. Mountain Packing List & Tips

Participant Requirements:

  1. Hikers attempting to reach the summit should be physically fit.
  2. If you have a sore throat, cold or breathing problems do not go beyond 3000m.
  3. If you have heart or lung problems do not attempt the mountain at all without consulting your doctor.
  4. Allow plenty of time for the body to acclimatize by ascending slowly.
  5. Drink 3-4 litres of fluid each day, water is best but fruit juices are a good supplement.
