Tarangire National Park
Tarangire is famous for the giant baobab trees and the sheer abundance of elephant herds on its plains. This land has its own magic and it should definitely be included in your northern Tanzanian safari circuit. It’s an easy drive from Arusha or Lake Manyara and your route can continue on to Ngorongoro crater and the Serengeti.
The Tarangire National park offers one of the greatest concentrations of game in Tanzania. The permanent water of the Tarangire river attracts thousands of animals, with zebra and wildebeest using the river as a refuge. Its wildlife includes buffalos, impala, gazelle, fringe-eared oryx and gerenuk, while its swamps give shelter to 550 varieties of birds. Tree climbing lions and leopards create a sense of nervousness to the game drives as they hide among the branches.
As well as going on a game drive within the park, you can also enjoy a view of the wildlife from a hot air balloon. In the surrounding conservation area you can go on a walking safari accompanied by experienced rangers or on an exciting night game drive. Another option is to include a day trip to Massai and Barabaig villages, or search for the ancient rock paintings in the vicinity of Kolo on the Dodoma road.
Tarangire can be visited all year round. The biggest concentration of animals occurs during the dry season from June to September.
Your accommodation options range from lodges to luxury tented camps or basic camps in and around the park. The lodges and camps in the conservation area give a percentage of their income to the local community. The villagers use this revenue to construct water pumps and boreholes, and to maintain schools and dispensaries.
